Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation from Acne
Since Acne Vulgaris is the number one skin disorder in America, I get a lot of acneic clients that come in and ask me about how to get rid of acne scars. Sometimes it is acne scarring, but most times, what they are actually pointing out, are the dark marks or discoloration where they have had active acne. Those dark spots are called Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation, aka PIP or PIH.
Post-inflammatory pigmentation occurs as the body's defense mechanism in response to inflammation of acne, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis or injury. Luckily, the pigmentation will fade with time and there are several different ways to treat the issue.
